"Sculpture, painting, installations, and photography—as well as dance, theater, music, and film—fill the galleries of the Whitney Museum of American Art in the latest edition of the Whitney Biennial. With a roster of artists at all points in their careers the Biennial provides a look at the current state of contemporary art in America. This is the seventy-sixth in the ongoing series of Biennials and Annuals presented by the Whitney since 1932, two years after the Museum was founded."

Cool Illustrations

Our current notions of color theory are only the newest in a long line of thoughts and diagrams, some as esoteric as alchemy.

Visiting Artist Io Palmer

Come see Visiting Artist Io Palmer talk about her work Tuesday 28 February
at noon in AJ 225!

"Through depictions of cleaning products, laborers' garments, and various
other industrial and domestic forms, Io Palmer's artworks explore complex
issues of class, race, and identity, in particular the impact society has on
the individual. Trained originally as a ceramicist, Palmer uses a variety of
processes and materials including metal, linen and drawing.  Palmer has been
featured in several national and international exhibitions, including
Working History at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, Hair Follies at
Concordia University in Montreal and Workspace, a solo exhibition at Wabash
College, Crawfordsville, Indiana. She has participated in several artist
residencies including the Santa Fe Art Institute, Santa Fe, NM, Art Channel
in Beijing, China and the Sanskriti Foundation, New Delhi, India."

Palmer holds a BFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia ,
Pennsylvania and an MFA from the University of Arizona in Tucson.  Io is

Fill a pixel! Be seen by satellite!

There's a cool project happening at bemysatellite. As they put it:

BeMySatellite is an initiative that aims to allowevery individual on Planet Earth to be uniquely documented by satellites.

They're currently focusing on Los Angeles, handing out assignments for specific times of day to be captured by the satellites overhead. Eventually, they will expand, so check back on them!

VISITING ARTIST:  We are hoping to get Jared Applegate come March 1st.  It's still in the works!

CONVERSATION TOPICS:  We hope our meeting on Monday March 12th can come with a conversational topic after the meeting.  Something controversial, political, or even something on appropriation... anything! The goal is to do a conversation topic once a month; a topic not covered in our studio classes!

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:
SIDESHOW:  a show where YOU the ARTIST can enter a piece not done in class to be hung on the 4th floor great wall.  The show will be April 1-7th.  A prospectus and flyers are in the works.
GRAD PANEL:  We will have this years grad panel on Monday April 16th at 7:00 pm.  Probably in the watercolor room, but location still to be determined.

IN THE WORKS:

Show them your moves.

There's a website being run by the Indianapolis Art Institute that features regular contests for animation, drawing, and graphic design.

It's called Indiana Uploaded, and it's open to any college student in Indiana. The website is just getting off the ground and there's not a lot of competition for the contests. The prizes they give out range from bragging rights to internships, but most of the time they give away cash.

It's free to participate, so check it out and submit something. It's a nice way to get some feedback on your work and you just might win something.

The Wrong Gallery

Read more here:

If you ever visited the Wrong Gallery in New York, you might have been greeted by a blunt notice: "Fuck Off We're Closed". As it happens, the gallery, which launched in 2002 as the smallest exhibition space in New York, never actually opened. It was nothing more than an expensive-looking glass door, identical to those of the Chelsea white cubes it satirised.

Meeting 1/30/2012 minutes

Hey Guys!
We had a GREAT meeting last night; very productive! Here's a few important dates:

- We have a BLOG ... YAY!

- SIDESHOW:  a show for YOU, the ARTIST... dates are April 1-7th located on the 4th floor Great Wall! The Sideshow art show is for students to be able make any art that is not an assignment or that you made to do. Then enter it into the show and VOILA... it's on display!

- EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP:  movie showing; Monday February 13th at 7:00 in the Watercolor Room... with pizza hopefully!

- GRAD PANEL:  April 16th at 7:00 pm ... location tbd still.  Probably the Watercolor room but who knows... maybe we can get AJ 225!

That's all the important dates for now! Come out to the meetings and post any findings that are exciting or controversial possibly in the art world on this blog for us to see :) Keep checking your emails!

Self-start Exhibitions!

From Art Fag City:

Sometime in my early post-adolescence, around the time I started to study art seriously, it occurred to me that most adults might have no idea what they’re doing. While I’m starting to get over it, this is a trauma revisited with every cocky curator or inarticulate grad student I encounter. Watch out. There are a lot of them out there.
